Animal Power

Though many animals are undeniably cute and fuzzy, they are so much more than that. Animals are also a source of renewable energy. In fact, they were one of the first sources of renewable energy ever used by man.

Originally, animal power was used for transportation. When people needed to travel from place to place, animals were used. Likewise, when humans needed to transport packages, lumber, crops, or many other types of items, animals were used.

Horses and oxen were particularly used to provide transportation. Animal power from these animals was also used to power mills. Though some people are not aware of this, animal power is still used in many parts of the world for these reasons.

Animal power can be used to make the planting of crops easier. Animals can even help to improve the timeliness of planting and contribute to improving crop yields. Without animal power, many farmers, without specialized machinery, would find it necessary to carry out tasks by hand, thereby reducing productivity.

In certain countries, people are far more used to seeing cars and heavy-duty machinery for transportation and agricultural work. It is important to realize, however, that there are many people who cannot afford cars and mechanical equipment. Furthermore, there are still areas in the world where traveling by car or truck may be tricky or even impossible.

Many types of animals are commonly used for animal power. Among these animals are horses, oxen, donkeys, buffalo, and cattle. Even pack animals provide animal power in certain locations.
